AMSTERDAM Olympic Stadium
The 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games marked a historic milestone for women's sport with the introduction of the first women's athletics events, a breakthrough achieved largely through the efforts of the International Women's Sports Federation (IFSF), the success of the 2nd Women's World Games in 1926 in Sweden, and the determination of Alice Milliat.
In addition to gymnastics, swimming and fencing, women's athletics is represented in 5 events: 100 meters, 4x100m relay, 800m, high jump and discus throw.
These events allowed women to officially compete in athletics for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games. In total, 21 countries entered female athletes to participate in these Games, representing approximately 10% of the athletes, a still small but symbolically significant proportion.
KEY FACTS
Lina Radke (Germany) won the 800 meters, setting a world record. However, this event was removed from the Olympic program until 1960, following debates over women's ability to compete in long-distance races.
Halina Konopacka (Poland) becomes the first female Olympic athletics gold medalist by winning the discus throw
The women's 4x100 meter relay, won by the Canadian team, attracted a lot of attention for the coordination and speed of the participants.
